This body of work forms part of an ongoing research project I am undertaking as part of a MA Photography course through Falmouth University.
Dyslexia is the most common specific learning difference in the UK, affecting between 6.6 and 9.9 million people, of which 800,000 to 1.3 million are young people in education. Despite these figures it appears that very little action is being taken to support people with this learning difference or help manage its long lasting and profound impact on an individual’s life.
This project chronicles my youngest daughters struggle with her dyslexia, how it governs her day-to-day life in ways that are frustrating, painful, emotionally traumatic but also triumphant and unexpected. The intent of this project is to create a comprehensive body of work that will provide a greater social awareness of how dyslexia affects an individual’s education, self-esteem and mental health.
